Procedures for Self-Arrangements

Write a letter to the Governor of the Island Territory of Bonaire requesting (a) permission to marry on Bonaire, and (b) a temporary residence permit. (Either the bride or the groom must be a resident on island for a week prior to the wedding day.)

The letter must be received at least two months prior to the intended wedding date, and it must be accompanied by the following:

  • Two passport photos of the bride and the groom
  • A copy of the bride's and the groom's passports
  • A copy of the bride's ad the groom's birth certificates
  • Proof of good conduct
  • Proof of eligibility to marry
    (from an Official Government Department, stating that you are single. If divorced, copies of the divorce papers are required).


Prior to your arrival on Bonaire, confirm that everything has been processed by the Governor's office. Upon arrival, pick up your temporary residency permit at the immigration department and register at the Registrar's office using your permit. Inform that office of your wedding date. You will be able to purchase your marriage certificate there.

You may bring your own witnesses (who must follow the above registration procedure), or you may choose a Bonairean witness who is registered at the census office.
