The coasts of Antigua are ideal for yacht cruising and racing, with constant trade-winds, and many harbours for exploration. Easily a week could be spent cruising around this picturesque island of the Caribbean. The sister island of Barbuda has shell laden beaches so long that they dip below the horizon.

There are good airline connections with North America and Europe and Antigua is centrally situated for Caribbean cruising.

The main events of 2001 will be:

  • 17 - 24 April CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA, hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club. For further information see their website at www.antiguaclassics.com   for entries please request from Classic Yacht Regatta c/o Antigua Yacht Club, PO Box 103 St Johns, Antigua
  • 29 April-May 5, ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK This has become one of the top three regattas of the world. It is run under the auspices of the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association.
  • 1st Week December, ANTIGUA YACHT SHOW, operated by V.E.B. Nicholson & Sons.

Other events of the year organised by the Antigua Yacht Club are the annual High Tide Series, Green Island Race, informal Round-the-Island-Race and the "after work" Thursday afternoon races for all-comers.


Classic Yacht Regatta

This regatta has become one of the foremost classic yacht regattas. This will be the 13th annual event.

The tentative program is:

  • Friday - Judging for the Concours d'Elegance
  • Saturday - Race 1 - off the south coast. Parade of Classics off the Yacht Club
  • Sunday - Race 2 - Off Falmouth Harbour
  • Monday - Race 3 - Followed by an Edwardian Gala Dinner
  • Tuesday - Heritage Festival in Nelson's Dockyard - Gig Racing and Tea Party - Prize giving party

The 34rd Annual Sailing Week regatta will commence with Race 1 on April 29, 2001 and end with Race 5 on May 4.  It will consist of four raced around laid buoys off the coast of the island, and on Olympic type course off Dickenson Bay on the second racing day for Division 'A'.  The event will be split into two separate divisions as follows:

  • Division 'A':  Racing, Big Boats, Sportboat and Racer/Cruiser (with spinnaker) classes
  • Division 'B': Racer/Cruiser (non-spinnaker); Cruiser and Bareboat classes

0800  Start of the Guadeloupe to Antigua Yacht Race.  Des Haies - English Harbour.
1600       Cavalier Rum Punch Party at Admiral's Inn.

1500   Signboard Competition judging at Admiral's Inn.
Saturday April 28th
1730           Skipper's Briefing at Temo sports, Falmouth Harbour (single representative only). Entry by official pass only. (Single representative only)
Sunday, April 29th
First Yacht Race.  Dickenson Bay Race.  Official party at Rex Halcyon Cove.
Monday, April 30th
Second Yacht Race.  Olympic Course off Dickenson Bay.  Official party at Jolly Harbour Marina
Tuesday, May 1st
Third Yacht Race. Falmouth Harbour Race. 
Wednesday, May 2nd Laydayo
1200            Antigua Yacht Club Single Handed Race in Falmouth Harbour.
1300 - 1700  Lay Day Activities at Antigua Yacht Club
Thursday, May 3rd
Fourth Yacht Race South Coast Race.  
Friday May 4th
Fifth Yacht Race - The Ocean Race
Saturday May 5th
1500 to 1700        Afternoon presentation of prizes in Nelson's Dockyard with extended format
1800       The Royal Antiguan Police Band "Beats the Retreat" in Nelson's Dockyard.
2000 - 0200 The Lord Nelson Ball*: Tickets in advance from the Committee Desk.
2130   The evenings presentation of prizes. 
*Dress: Lord Nelson Ball - for the Ball one must be appropriately dressed.
For Men - this means jacket and tie and long trousers.
For Ladies - Cocktail dresses.
The dress code will be strictly enforced

Antigua Charter Yacht Show

The Yacht Show is organised and operated by V.E.B. Nicholson & Sons (Antigua Ltd). It takes place during the first week of December each year. This will be the 38th year this firm has invited agents from all over the world to inspect large charter yachts that have sailed from North America and Europe. A Marine Trades Show is also organised by the Marine Trades Association.

Some of the events are:

  • Inspection of yachts by agents for the upcoming charter season
  • Marine Trades Exposition
  • Lectures & slideshows
  • Luncheon & cocktail parties (by invitation)
  • Beating of the Retreat by the Royal Antiguan Police Force
